How to Lose Weight While Traveling in Italy (Or Anywhere!)

italyOh, Italy, how I love thee. Pizza, pasta, gelato, how can I possibly pass these delicacies up? A great advice is learn how to lose weight while traveling in your vacation. I’ve had an AMAZING time in Rome and learn the benefits of being your own boss is that you can travel when you want to. And it’s hard to beat a trip to Italy! I came here a few years ago with my family, but this time, I wanted to make sure my husband and I had a romantic way to celebrate our 10-year anniversary. Between that, and meeting up with old friends, we are eating A LOT of delicious food.

Here’s the truly bizarre thing:

Even though I’ve been eating huge meals two or three times a day, I still manage to feel light most of the time. My pants are even feeling looser! It’s gotten to the point where I feel like I don’t even need to do my regular workouts because I’m managing to stay in shape just being a tourist. Wow! Talk about a sweet deal. Here’s how I’m doing it:

  1. Go Sightseeing On Foot

In Italy, parking is scarce and traffic can be a nightmare. Rather than take the car out we’ve been walking whenever we can. Taking our time walking around the city means we get to see the little details and cultural delights we might otherwise miss. New cities are best seen on foot, and it feels great to get out and stretch our legs after a morning of hard work online. We end up going out for two, sometimes three hours at a time without even realizing it! It doesn’t even feel like working out, but we’re reaping all the benefits.

  1. Use the Kitchen

Our Roman apartment has a full cucina (kitchen), so we’ve been taking advantage of it whenever we can. Cooking at home allows my husband and I to stay as close to our normal routine as possible while we’re inside working. We buy plenty of fruits and vegetables to get us through the day.

  1. Request a Blender

I made a special request for a blender specifically so I could make my shakes, which I absolutely love! I travel with them wherever I go to give me a boost of healthy energy and aid digestion. Believe me, this comes in handy, especially when you’ve been eating lots of heavy carbohydrates! When I feel filled to the brim but I still want to get some protein, fiber and antioxidants in my system, I make a quick shake in between meals.

  1. Keep Up Your Fitness Routine

I stay connected to my AMAZING community online even while I’m traveling, which inspires me to work out at least three times a week in home gym. Even if you don’t have access to a gym on vacation, make sure to do some simple strength training exercises a few times a week to stay fit. I don’t know about you, but when I work out, I have more energy overall during the day – which I need for all this walking!

  1. Walk After Meals

After a heavy meal, like bread and pasta, we go out and walk around some more! We’re getting this from the Italians, who seem to love walking everywhere. While long meals are common, the rest of the time, people are hustling around the city on foot. Walking after a meal helps to aid digestion and burn off some of those calories, especially before settling in for the night.

  1. Don’t Deprive Yourself

I don’t believe in diets, and I definitely don’t believe in depriving yourself of REAL FOOD! I have cheat days precisely for this reason. If you try to convince yourself not to eat something delicious – especially in another country – you’ll just end up gorging later on. You don’t want to miss out on trying new foods because you’re trying to stick to a strict diet plan.

My approach is this: relax, and live like the locals do. In fact, you should completely immerse yourself in the culture that you’re visiting, dessert and all. As they say, when in Rome…
